Slow speeds BIT POP
[nl] Shadow Hawkins on Thursday, 09 October 2008 15:26:39
Hi, Since two weeks i have my own IPv6 tunnel with endpoint BIT in the Netherlands. This tunnel works fine, but the speeds i reach are pretty slow (50 - 100KB/sec). Now BIT also hosts a Ubuntu Linux mirror, so i tried downloading a CD Image via IPv4 to my server (colocated in Amsterdam), i reached 11.3MB/sec. When i did the same via IPv6, i reached 70KB/sec. I sent an e-mail to BIT regarding these speeds and they told me they don't limit the speeds in any way. My round-time to the endpoint is about 4ms, wich is pretty low i guess. Does anyone know what could go wrong?

Where exactly are you downloading from? What are you downloading, which tunnel protocol are you using, which route are your packets taking, which MTU do you have, which Operating Systems are involved, which programs, which this that etc, a lot lot lot more details are needed than what you are providing.

Yes, you are totally right! I am using a IPv6 in IPv4 tunnel with the following configuration on my Ubuntu Linux server: iface sixxs inet6 v4tunnel address 2001:7b8:2ff:23d::2 netmask 64 endpoint 193.109.122.244 ttl 64 up ip link set mtu 1280 dev sixxs up ip route add default via 2001:7b8:2ff:23d::1 dev sixxs I am downloading the following file with wget: http://nl.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04.1/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso I use the -4 and -6 switch to force either IPv4 or IPv6. I traceroute from my server to the endpoint: traceroute to 193.109.122.244 (193.109.122.244), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 85-92-128-4.pcextreme.nl (85.92.128.4) 0.644 ms 0.987 ms 1.383 ms 2 89-18-191-29.pcextreme.nl (89.18.191.29) 0.362 ms 0.558 ms 0.730 ms 3 89.30.133.9 (89.30.133.9) 3.996 ms 4.089 ms 4.210 ms 4 bb2.ams.reasonnet.com (89.30.133.2) 4.465 ms 4.552 ms 4.610 ms 5 amsix-501.xe-0-0-0.jun1.galilei.network.bit.nl (195.69.144.35) 2.866 ms 2.947 ms 2.938 ms 6 nlede01.sixxs.net (193.109.122.244) 2.786 ms 2.561 ms 2.691 ms And via IPv6 to the Ubuntu mirror: traceroute to ubuntu.bit.nl (2001:7b8:3:37::21:1) from 2001:7b8:2ff:23d::2, 30 hops max, 16 byte packets 1 gw-574.ede-01.nl.sixxs.net (2001:7b8:2ff:23d::1) 3.306 ms 2.548 ms 2.68 ms 2 sixxs-gw.ipv6.network.bit.nl (2001:7b8:3:4f:290:6900:4fc6:d81f) 4.552 ms 3.541 ms 2.632 ms 3 ubuntureleases.bit.nl (2001:7b8:3:37::21:1) 4.18 ms 3.6 ms 3.095 ms I also tried a few other IPv6 enabled Ubuntu mirrors, but i simply wont reach higher speeds then 50 ~ 100KB/sec via my tunnel.

It seems that there are interface errors on one of the interfaces of nlede01. This can definitely explain the low troughput. BIT NOC is looking into it.

Yes, great! I am reaching speeds of 9MB/sec at the moment :) Thank you all for your help! Keep up the good project!
