traceroute problems
[ie] Shadow Hawkins on Wednesday, 24 December 2003 20:47:56
Hi there. I have a problem traceroute6'-ing anywhere. ping6 works fine, and everything else appears normal. I can traceroute anything on my LAN, as far as my ip6 endpoint. I tried googling, and while I came across others with similar problems, I did not find a resolution. 2001:770:100:6::1 is the pop endpoint of my tunnel. Output from traceroute6 follows. I also ran 'tcpdump -i sixxs ip6' on my router at the same time, an have attached the output from that also. ipv6 is not filtered in any way on the router. traceroute6 output:
niall@cloud:~$ /usr/sbin/traceroute6 2001:770:100:6::1 traceroute to 2001:770:100:6::1 (2001:770:100:6::1) from 2001:770:104:0:209:5bff:fe55:2c33, 30 hops max, 16 byte packets 1 2001:770:104::1 (2001:770:104::1) 47.85 ms 3.871 ms 3.375 ms 2 * * * <snip> 8 * * * 9 gw-7.dub-01.ie.sixxs.net (2001:770:100:6::1) 35.016 ms 32.113 ms 32.42 ms
tcpdump output:
gonzo:/# tcpdump -i sixxs ip6 19:34:04.695214 2001:770:104:0:209:5bff:fe55:2c33.32855 > gw-7.dub-01.ie.sixxs.net.33434: udp 16 [hlim 1] 19:34:09.698124 2001:770:104:0:209:5bff:fe55:2c33.32855 > gw-7.dub-01.ie.sixxs.net.33434: udp 16 <snip> 19:35:39.862082 gw-7.dub-01.ie.sixxs.net > 2001:770:104:0:209:5bff:fe55:2c33: icmp6: gw-7.dub-01.ie.sixxs.net udp port 33434 unreachable 19:35:39.867176 2001:770:104:0:209:5bff:fe55:2c33.32855 > gw-7.dub-01.ie.sixxs.net.33434: udp 16 19:35:39.891928 gw-7.dub-01.ie.sixxs.net > 2001:770:104:0:209:5bff:fe55:2c33: icmp6: gw-7.dub-01.ie.sixxs.net udp port 33434 unreachable

As you didn't provide your configuration I just have to guess that you didn't set your ttl and/or mtu to a correct value. It's either that or you are firewalling. Next to that, when tracerouting use -n, hostnames are not handy in most cases.
