Reverse DNS on Easynet POP
[de] Shadow Hawkins on Wednesday, 03 December 2003 14:37:44
Hi, since monday I have a subnet for my tunnel on the easynet POP. I added a reverse DNS server the same day and the SOA record of the reverse DNS zone still points to ns1.sixxs.net. (Using dig +trace the SOA points to ns.easybone.net and sometimes to ns1.sixxs.net) Reverse DNS resolving works when forcing to use the "correct" nameserver - is reverse DNS supported for easynet POP? - how long does it take until the SOA record is updated ? ( I assume about 48 hours are enough) - is there any special configuration needed besides setting up the reverse zones (which work when forcing the server) and setting the NS in subnet configuration?

[read the thing about operational problems to be sent to info@sixxs.net, but then again if you want to make a public appearance...] $ dig @ns2.sixxs.net 1.8.9.0.8.f.6.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.int 1.8.9.0.8.f.6.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa. 604800 IN NS ns0.xname.org. $ dig @ns2.sixxs.net 1.8.9.0.8.f.6.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa 1.8.9.0.8.f.6.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa. 604800 IN NS ns0.xname.org. It works, so unless you are hitting the ip6.int problem, where some of the NS's in that zone don't work, or a similar problem for ip6.arpa, where the glue zones doesn't match the real zone, it is your problem.

So, we need to setup a ip6.int and ip6.arpa or only ip6.arpa with production class 2001::...

Currently, because many resolvers don't support ip6.arpa you have to setup both ip6.arpa and ip6.int. You could also forget about ip6.int and start complaining about services that don't resolve ip6.arpa. The Concepts POP only delegates ip6.arpa btw.

IMO this is good, forcing the usage of ip6.arpa a bit :) Since Windows for example currently only resolves ip6.int and it is going to disappear anyway.

There was a configuration error (ns.easynet.de was authoritative for 9.0.8.f.6.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.int/arpa) which is now rectified. I did not verify that this actually caused problems, but it might be. I apologise for them; we certainly strive for a clean DNS setup (inet and arpa for now). Robert
