Norway to Belgium via USA
[gb] Shadow Hawkins on Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:45:31
Hi It seems that traffic from the Norway endpoint (Port80) to the Belgium endpoint (EasyNet), both in Europe, is routed via the U.S.A.:-
2: 2002-sixxs.cr0-r23.ver-osl.no.ip6.p80.net 36.106ms 3: v1611-r23.cr0-r69.tc-sto.se.ip6.p80.net 43.421ms 4: v1314-r69.cr0-r74.gbl-got.se.ip6.p80.net 54.671ms 5: v1313-r74.cr0-r72.gbl-cph.dk.ip6.p80.net 58. 84ms 6: v1308-r72.cr0-r70.tc2-ams.nl.ip6.p80.net 69.127ms 7: ams-ix.he.net 69.308ms 8: 10gigabitethernet1-4.core1.lon1.he.net 84.611ms 9: 10gigabitethernet2-3.core1.nyc4.he.net 148. 29ms 10: 10gigabitethernet1-2.core1.nyc1.he.net 147.937ms 11: 2001:458:26:2::580 149.947ms 12: 2001:6f8:1:0:87:86:77:112 217.509ms 13: 2001:6f8:1:0:87:86:77:40 218.198ms 14: 2001:6f8:1:0:87:86:77:47 224.963ms 15: 2001:6f8:1:2:87:86:71:165 asymm 16 244.467ms 16: fe0-0.ar1.gdbru.be.easynet.net 223.223ms 17: bebru01.sixxs.net 224.470ms
Not only is this less than optimal routing-wise, it leaves data subject to the interception laws of the U.S.A.. (this could apply to Sweden now also, due to the law they passed recently). If more and more countries start to adopt this approach, I wonder where that will leave the end user with regard to privacy. On a positive note perhaps it will encourage more use of end-to-end encryption. P.S. Any chance of a "Preview" button when posting a new topic?

Try and contact ipv6@he.net (or whatever address you find that maybe does work) and see if they actually respond (excluding the ticket generated in their ticket interface of course). They are shipping the packets to the wrong place and after at least 5 years they still haven't learned that they should not be doing that.

Port80 and EasyNet seem to have ipv6 pressent at LINX (London). Port80 will also be in DECIX (Frankfurt) ("planned for 2008"), EasyNet is already there. So they could peer in London instead of pushing traffic throug HE and US.
