DNS Providers and AAAA records
[nl] Shadow Hawkins on Wednesday, 07 January 2004 12:40:21
Hi All, I have REGISTER.COM as a DNS provider. For IPV4 the work fine but they don't know anything about IPV6 and are not willing to do anything to it. Since I'm 'only' one user for them I can not do so much. :? Can we, in the name of SIXXS, RIPE or 6BONE, request them to make it possible to enter AAAA records in the DNS databases? Maybe we can also make a 'White list' and a 'Black List' of DNS providers handling IPV6 records to make if feasible where those problems are? Off cource being connected to IPV6 is one but having IPV6 DNS entries is a second need for all of us. Erik-Jan

www.dnsmadeeasy.com just enabled AAAA records in their user interface. Is there a place in the wiki where we can put this in? They do not yet support dynamic DNS on AAAA records. Does anybody know of a DDNS client that does?

TransIP provides AAAA records in their web interface.

The TransIP DNS Servers provide AAAA records. but their DNS servers don't have AAAA records pointing to them, as far as I can see. (to bad)

If you are still searching for a provider who supports AAAA records on their nameserver, i could advise you xname.org (http://www.xname.org). I am using them for all my IPv6-Domains. They are not really fast but they are free for non-commercial using and until today very stable. If you want a faster provider, you have to pay for it... you get, what you pay for it ;)

Hi, I'm using sitelutions.com which is also free... not really comfortable as you have to enter IPv6 records via their web interface, but that should pose no problems since it's for free;) Regards, Wolfgang

You could always use http://www.afraid.org, but please note that ALL domains hosted by this provider will be somehow accessible to all registered users pending for you to approve the records they want to create off your domain. They also have this neat interface for reversing your IPv6 tunnel range if wanted. Enjoy

http://www.pmsdns.org/ Not the most user0friendly for newbie types, but it's rock solid in terms of reliability, and a straight forward interface for those who know what they're doing. Also, of course, free.

Any hoster can provide AAAA records, lest they have a DNS server that supports it or their webinterface. Thus I suggest that you get yourself a real DNS hoster for this typical case. Hosting the records shouldn't be a big problem btw. But getting them to have an IPv6 transport is much worse. And an even bigger problem is getting your DNS servers in the gtld with AAAA records. Nothing to do about that but complain by phone and complain hard. PS: RIPE/ARIN/APNIC don't care about domainnames specifically but they do care about other internet resources. They won't and cannot force companies to do things that companies don't want. Vote with your money ;)

I think there are quite many TLDs that support AAAA records. Not all 3rd party registrars do in their websetup though. But maybe it is possible to contact your TLD to ask them to add AAAA records for your NS entry? This is what I did with nic-se.se and they said they would.

I use zoneedit.com for free AAAA records. Great, free DNS service. I hope the advertisement is not unsuitable; if it is, I am sorry.
