I am using MacOS X and I notice that the network interface assigns itself an address, such as: fe80::216:cbff:fe9f:dc47%en0 where the interface name is part of the numerical address - I believe this is known a link local? Using this address with ssh works fine: ssh -6 "fe80::216:cbff:fe9f:dc47%en0" and telnet too: telnet -6 "fe80::216:cbff:fe9f:dc47%en0" 80 but fails with most browsers, if I specify: http://[fe80::216:cbff:fe9f:dc47%en0]/ Further investigation leads me to RFC 2732, which would suggest this is an unsupported format. Is this an indication that the RFC needs updating or something is not consistent somewhere?

Further investigation leads me to the IPv6 page at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6 This shows that RFC 4007 adds a notion of "zone indices". This is newer than the most recent document I could find on URIs, that is RFC 3986. This suggests an updated RFC for "Uniform Resource Identifier" needs to be specified, taking into account the requirements of RFC 4007. Are there any newer documents that I am missing?

Zone indicies are not supported by most applications. As I understand, they exist primarily to support routing packets between multiple interfaces on the same machine. Check out this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_IPv6_application_support
