How to get a maintainer (mnt-by)?

A friend of my wants to make a RIPE account, but we have problems with the mnt-by field. I have tried to create an maintainer object, but an mnt-by is still needed. Any ideas how to solve it?

you can use your "mntner" name in the "mnt-by" field while creating a "mnter object"
I wish this was explanatory...

It seems the names must be in uppercase chars, so that must be the reason why i had problems with it.

in my case, i screwed up and made my maintainer handle an identical string to my person handle. after spending some time on the ripe www handle editor, i sorted it out. i completed the transactions successfully without resorting to uppercase characters anywhere, however.
