ntpd problem
[de] Shadow Hawkins on Friday, 29 April 2005 12:38:38
Hello, well i have here a question, which is a little bit offtopic. Well i run ntpd and it works on 3 of total 4 computers. Exact on the box on which the ipv6 endpoint is i do have a small problem with ntpd. Well i run ntpd and have set it up properly...the config is identical to the other boxes in ntp.conf but they sync is also showing an asterix at the server synchronized to. But on this box ntpd shows no sync status. remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter ============================================================================== vega.cbk.poznan .PPS. 1 u 62 64 377 79.123 656897. 6470.00 ntp2.ptb.de .PTB. 1 u 40 64 377 63.033 646673. 9887.03 rustime01.rus.u .DCFp. 1 u 25 64 377 55.869 651452. 6534.80 ntp1.t-online.d .DCFa. 1 u 45 64 377 48.139 648837. 7958.21 When i turn on "iburst" they do get synced to, shortly but after some minutes its the same result. Do perhaps anybody know why ntpd wont sync here properly? IPv6 is no problem because i have a dynamical ip adress which gets changed every 24h (Technical provider forces it) and in my scripts i restart ntpd as its needed on a new ip. Well also i need to run ntpdate with the script before ntpd starts...for secure time...but also i mean that the clock is not keeping track as ntpd does not sync. Also the clock is showing after some hourse some time backwars for example if its 19:00 then it shows for example 18:50 ...just to explain it. Any clue why ntpd wont sync? On the other boxes it works. Regards Sebastian

seems to me like your offset is way to high. ntpd also slices the time instead of stepping it, iirc. i do, however, not understand, how it gets out of sync if you do run ntpdate before. consider setting the clock manually before running ntpd and be sure to have read the manual (also for ntpq)! it contains helpful information on how clock-updates are done. ...might be that sync-status won't be shown unless the clocks _are_ in sync. also, you shouldn't need to sync to stratum-1 servers.
