/32 or /48 in whois and "historic" whois information
[nl] Shadow Hawkins on Monday, 09 June 2014 14:20:31
Hi, I found one of my IPv6 addresses blocked in the English Wikipedia; then found out that this was due to the whole subnet of 2001:1AF8:0:0:0:0:0:0/32 being blocked. Now sometimes the Wikipedia editors are having a hard time understanding IPv6, so I asked them why the whole /32 had been blocked. Their answer: the abuse came from 2001:1AF8:4700:A05A:1:0:0:256, and this is *not* a SixXS delegated subnet. This strikes me as a bit odd, and I'm not sure how to proceed, so here are a few questions: 1) would it be possible to partition 2001:1aF8::/32 in /48 blocks in the whois-information, even for non-allocated blocks? 2) is it possible (for an outsider like me) to find historic information regarding the 2001:1AF8:4700::/48 block? 3) should I warn abuse@sixxs.net or abuse@leaseweb.com or both - or none? Please note that this is about a month old now - it's not my top priority ;-)

Now sometimes the Wikipedia editors are having a hard time understanding IPv6, so I asked them why the whole /32 had been blocked.
They are supposed to be quite enlightened about all of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jasper_Deng/IPv6 Wikipedians are a bit strange that way, they love to block stuff and they definitely do not bother contacting the ISPs involved either, bit of a shame. It is even more annoying as they should really know better.
1) would it be possible to partition 2001:1aF8::/32 in /48 blocks in the whois-information, even for non-allocated blocks?
That is up to LeaseWeb, note that 2001:1af8::/32 is theirs, SixXS only is 'borrowing' 2001:1af8:fe00::/40 + 2001:1af8:ff00::/40 for the nlhaa01. Note that all SixXS prefixes are listed in RIPE whois and in whois.sixxs.net.
2) is it possible (for an outsider like me) to find historic information regarding the 2001:1AF8:4700::/48 block?
I would not be surprised if that prefix never ended up in WHOIS, does not look like it: whois -h whois.ripe.net -- "--list-versions 2001:1AF8:4700::/48" % This is the RIPE Database query service. % The objects are in RPSL format. % % The RIPE Database is subject to Terms and Conditions. % See http://www.ripe.net/db/support/db-terms-conditions.pdf %ERROR:101: no entries found % % No entries found in source RIPE. % This query was served by the RIPE Database Query Service version 1.73.1 (DBC-WHOIS3)
3) should I warn abuse@sixxs.net or abuse@leaseweb.com or both - or none?
Prefixes that are in WHOIS and where SixxS is responsible will have a proper abuse-mailbox and other details that clearly indicate that it is SixXS's responsibility. Additionally (for ARIN for instance which does not have delegations) they are also in whois.sixxs.net. And yes, you could report something to other abuse addresses, but sending them an email with something like "stuff is blocked at website XYZ" will not get any resolution as there is no actual abuse, especially if it was in the past and you don't even know the time.

Hi, thanks for the explanation. Unfortunately, it happened again. I have asked Leaseweb about their Whois for the non-SixXS-delegated IP's, but so far, no reply. Leaseweb clearly uses parts of their 2001:1af8::/32 space for "other" things than SixXS, but doesn't document this in Whois - which has the rather nasty side effect of implicitly returning the two /40 subnets that have been delegated to SixXS when asked for 2001:1af8:something for something <> fe00, ff00. Is it possible for the SixXS project to kindly ask Leaseweb about this unfortunate inclusion in their Whois answers?

You really need to contact Leaseweb directly about non-SixXS delegated space.
