[call for opinions] Stopping support of ip6.int reverse

As the e.f.f.3.ip6.arpa tree for the 6bone, which is currently being used by gblon01 and nlams02 (IPng) is being constructed, at least they say, would there be any objection in stopping complete support of ip6.int reverses in 2 months after e.f.f.3.ip6.arpa tree has been found 'working'. The proposal thus is: - e.f.f.3.ip6.arpa works - 2 months after that we stop and close down all ip6.int delegations. Reasoning: - Identifying broken software can only be done when ip6.int doesn't work. Known ip6.int only software/hardware: - Old Cisco's (which you will need to upgrade anyways due to many bugs) - Windows XP SP1 (fixed in SP2) - Redhat Fedora Core 1 - ...

It is great news ip6.arpa is coming, but to bad Windows XP SP2 is coming at the end of june or begin of july (or maby later knowing Microsoft) I think you should wait until then to phaseout ip6.int. although ip6.ini is only on the KewlioPOP, so nobody will notice the differance.

e.f.f.3.ip6.arpa finally works as of today. Expect an announcement soon on when the ip6.int tree is going to be taken offline for SixXS delegations.

I'm allready used to ip6.arpa and don't have a problem with it, its maybe good to encourage the use of ip6.arpa, because it will be the new standard soon. A friend who has his range on nlams02 (and is sitting next to me) doesn't have a problem with it, he allready has both e.f.f.3.ip6.int and e.f.f.3.ip6.arpa in his bind settings.

I did the same as your Friend, setting up both INT and ARPA. I like the idea of stopping the whole IP6.INT because it would maken applications work better at the end. but maby stoppig the IP6.INT when SP2 for Windows XP is out? (I thought it should be within 2 or 3 months... at least I hope) are there any IP6.ARPA only software/hardware ?

I have 2001:: production adress space, but I think it is a good idea to shut down .ip6.int Windows users might be interested if there is a patch for XP SP1 as a standalone fix (as long as SP 2 is not available)

Hi, I would definitely wait till Windows XP SP2 is out or a "fix" is available. XP SP2 should be available within the next months, hopefully though. Kind regards Lars

Although having a Windoze fix around when disabling ip6.int would be nice, IMHO it is not required. IPv6 would continue to work, only reverse lookups would fail. In most cases this would not lead to major problems, right?

I've currently set up both, but wouldn't mind it. I've hacked the change from int to arpa into my djbdns port, so that ought to not be a problem. By the way, will we meet at FOSDEM?

Oh, how sad is that! Fixing glibc to support bitstring lables just to find out that they are deprecated ... ;-P

I just did a test of Windows XP SP2 RC1 and it supports ip6.arpa queries, thus..... guess what my prime reason is for using a RC1 ;)

I can support nuking ip6.int from within AS8954. Using DNAME tree replication right now seems to work just fine for AS12859 (my employer), but I do not see any obstacle for deleting the int tree (as long as it is cleaned up in the eff3 zone too!). I had some customer at AS12859 who wished to have int/arpa both in place. As the customer is always right[tm], AS12859 will not be dismantling ip6.int any time soon.
