there are a few things that can be done to make the forums much more user friendly
one is to somehow highlight a thread or change the icon within forum posts that you have posted on
another is to show who was the last person to post within a topic as well
maybe to highlight forum posts that are new since your last visit...?
just some quick thoughts is all

I suggest that if you want to participate that way in the forums your best option is to subscribe to the RSS/ATOM feeds and manage the above state using your favorite RSS/ATOM reader.
